What types and features do access control electric lock have?
Types of Electric strike commonly used in access control: electric bolt lock, Magnetic lock, electric strike lock, electric rim lock (followed by popularizing rate):
Used to open the door on the occasion of the power cut. It is required by fire protection that the power should be off automatically in the buildings with the outbreak of fire. And the electric strike should be unlocked to make people escape easily. That’s why most electric strike will be unlocked after power off.
1.1 Types of electric bolt lock:
electric bolt lock is classified into 4 types by its wire: electric bolt lock with 2 wires, 4wires, 5wires and 8 wires.
There are two wires, include the red one and the black one. The red wire connects with the power and 12VDC while the black wire connects with GND. The door will be unlocked on the condition that any one of the wires is disconnected, causing the cylinder retracted. With a simple design, two-wire electric bolt lock is one kind of cheap inferior electric bolt lock that the lock body will be easily heated to hurt hands and has heavy impulse current without single-chip controls circuit.
1.12 Four-wire electric bolt lock:
There are two wires, include the red one and the black one. The red wire connects with the power and 12VDC while the black wire connects with GND. And there are two white magnetic signal wires, which could reflect door status. With the help of door magnetic, it sends different signals that whether the door is opened or closed to the access controller to make a judgment. These signals are significant to judge, such as break-in alarm or the door keeps opened for a long time. If it is not necessary, door magnetic wire can be neglected. Single-chip is used on four-wire electric bolt lock with advantages of benign heating, delayed control and door magnetic signal sending, which is seen as a high-cost performance and commonly-used product.
With one more opposite signal of door magnetic, five-wire electric bolt lock, used on some special occasion, is almost the same as four-wire electric bolt lock, which is inconvenient on some formal occasion for the reason that engineers have to test which one is better.The red wire and black wire offer power.Another three wires, COM, NO and NC, form two group of opposite signals –one is closed signal and the other is an opening signal.
It has the same principle as five-wire electric bolt lock except that the state of cylinder sending is added, which means different signals is sending when the state of the cylinder is different.
1.15 Advantage and disadvantage of electric bolt lock:
- Applicable: glazed door, wooden door and so on.
- Advantages: beautiful appearance, security through obscurity, good security and uneasily to pry up and open.
- Disadvantages: it is hard to get lock hole on installation.
- Notes: some none-sill glazed door (glazed door frame) or none-overlapping top of the door has to be installed with the help of none-frame glazed door attachments that are expensive as the result of low production
It is also called electromagnetic lock, which depends on the attraction created between the electromagnet and iron ore to close the door.
The magnetic lock is also one kind of electric lock that makes the door open after power-off.
Some magnetic locks can send a signal to the state of the door. Observing the power terminal, you can find that besides the power Amphenol connector, there are another three Amphenol connectors—COM ,NO and NC which sends different signals to access controller to make judgment according to the door’s open or closed, such as break-in alarm, door keeps open for a long time need judgment made by signals. If these functions are unnecessary, the door status signal terminal is suggested to disconnect.
2.1.1 Applicable: wooden door, fire door.
2.1.2 Advantages: stable performance, lower repair rate and easy to install ( fix the lock body with screw and trunking is used without lock hole).
2.1.3 Disadvantages: usually installed at the top of the doorsill. And it’s exposure make it not as beautiful or safe as electric bolt lock hidden installed, but the price, which sometimes is higher, is the same as electric bolt lock.
With limited suction, its commonly model is a capacity of 280kg, which emphatically open the door by a person of great strength or many people at the same time. So magnetic lock is usually used on some low-level security occasions like offices which keep a watch on the gentleman, not a dirty dog. Capacity over 500kg should be needed in some safe occasions, for example in prison.
3, Electric strikes Lock

Some people call it “cathode lock” falsely. In fact, it is just one model of cathode lock.
It is installed on the side of the door, used together with the mechanical lock.
3.1 Advantages: cheap, two types included power-off opening and power-off closing.
3.2 Disadvantages: heavily impact current will have an influence on the stability of the system. As installed on the side of a door, wiring that dropping the wire through door frame from the top of the door is not easy because of partition among door jamb. The lock body should be put into a hole, which makes it difficult to install the lock. Both of swiping card and a ball-style mechanical lock can open the door. However, the queries and security of electric access system will be reduced. The limited capacity of damage can make people kick the door open easily. That’s why this kind of electric lock is not suggested to use.
4, Electric rim lock
it is mainly used for occasions like cell gate or second door, which could be open by a rotary switch or key.

4.1 Disadvantages: impulse current impacts the stability of door, which creates noise when the door is open. Meanwhile, the inconvenient installation makes welding equipment is always needed to spot-welding on the gate. Please be careful that during construction opening delay have to be set no more than 1second. Otherwise, a long-time set will cause lock heating to damage itself.
For these disadvantages, a new type lock named “mute electrified lockset”, “mute lockset” or “electric lock” is designed whose cylinder is moved by driving a small motor other than electromagnetic principle.
